The Access Across America tour is coming June 8 to Oklahoma City. It’s
an interactive national FOI training tour for journalists sponsored by
SPJ through a grant by the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation to spread training
in accessing public records.
SPJ's national Freedom of Information committee chairman and national
FOI expert David Cuillier will teach the two-hour program from 7 to 9
p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at The Oklahoman auditorium, 9000 N. Broadway in
Oklahoma City.
The workshop will include: • Ideas for document-based stories • Strategies for effective records requests • Psychological skills for getting officials to give you what you need • Rousing inspiration for doing great journalism in tough times
Participants will receive extensive handouts with tons of story ideas
and records resources specific to Oklahoma.
About the trainer: Dave Cuillier has served as an SPJ newsroom trainer in FOI since 2005
and is a frequent writer of FOI Toolbox columns in Quill. A former
journalist, he now teaches classes on access to records and conducts
research in FOI. Cuillier is co-author with Charles
Davis of the book, “The Art of Access: Strategies for Acquiring Public
